Zach Smith accuses Tom Herman of infidelity in scathing rant
On Sunday evening, former Ohio State wide receivers coach Zach Smith unleashed a profanity-laden tirade on Twitter (tweets can be found below) aimed at Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman and Herman's wife, Michelle. In the rant, Smith accused Tom Herman of cheating on Michelle Herman while threatening to expose other transgressions committed by the Texas coach.
Zach Smith and Tom Herman were co-workers on the Ohio State football staff from 2012-14, when Herman left to take the Houston head coach job. By all accounts the two assistants were close during that time and even took many recruiting trips together. However, signs that the relationship had turned sour came in August when Ohio State opened an investigation into how the athletic department handled domestic violence accusations made against Smith by his ex-wife, Courtney Smith. The investigation ultimately led to a three-game suspension for current Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer.
Herman found his name in the middle of the controversy, when an Aug. 11 report from Jeff Snook said that Herman was responsible for alerting reporter Brett McMurphy to Zach Smith's previously unreported 2009 arrest, when Zach Smith worked under Meyer at Florida, afterCourtney Smith, alleged he abused her. Snook alleged that Herman had been upset because Zach Smith helped Ohio State land a commitment from 247Sports Composite five-star wide receiver and Austin, Texas, native Garrett Wilson , who picked the Buckeyes over Texas. Herman later denied the report, stating that he and his wife had only assistedCourtney Smith financially in March 2017.
Herman's name would come up again, however, after Ohio State released a 23-page report following the investigation into how Meyer and other staff members handled the domestic violence accusations against Smith. The report stated that an unnamed Buckeyes staffer, along with "one or more high school coaches," had attended a strip club with Zach Smith during a recruiting trip to Florida in May 2014. An Ohio State spokesman later confirmed that the unnamed staffer was Herman.

In perhaps a foreshadow of things to come, when Texas lost by a point to West Virginia on Nov. 3 Smith tweeted this about the final result. Smith didn't name Herman, but it was clear what he was talking about.
Smith began by taking a shot at Herman for Texas' 2018 season. The Longhorns are currently 7-3. Then Smith began his diatribe aimed at the Hermans.
Smith accuses Herman of running from the truth, and then claims that the Texas coach has attempted to get others to stop him from exposing what he claims to know.
If someone did indeed try to talk Smith out of this rant, it fell on deaf ears. Smith apparently reached a breaking point.
As Smith's rant continued, others tried to chime in with the recommendation to stop. Smith didn't listen.
Smith's actions were heavily criticized following his firing from Ohio State. Then Smith makes the first accusation that Herman has been unfaithful to his wife.
Smith brings Brett McMurphy back into the fold. This isn't the first time Smith has attacked McMurphy on Twitter, as the former coach continues to be displeased with McMurphy's reporting on his marital issues.
Smith alleges that Herman had relations with an Iowa State recruiting girl, and Smith even says that Herman divulged the info himself.
Smith furthers his accusations, and alleges that Michelle Herman confided in his ex-wife, Courtney Smith, about the alleged actions of the Texas head coach.
A Twitter user asked Smith if he may be under the influence of alcohol during the rant. Smith responded with another dig at Herman.
Zach Smith's coaching career, at least at any high-profile program, may have already been over. However, this rant makes it almost a guarantee that no Power Five school would risk hiring Smith again due to potential public backlash.
Whether or not you believe the Hermans played a role in delivering information about Smith's past to the media, one thing is clear: Smith believes they did.
Smith's rant is already lengthy, but could more accusations be on the way? Tom Herman will have to prepare himself to answer some difficult questions this week after Smith's public tirade.
